In the wake of yesterday’s deadly shooting at a South Florida high school, local school officials talk the school system’s own precautions to keep students and faculty safe.
The Lafayette Parish School System says they have a good amount to keep students safe.
The schools have security cameras that are linked with the Lafayette police department so they are always under watch by multiple departments.
Also, there is a buzzing system that doesn’t allow just anyone to walk through at some schools.
Chief Administrative Officer Joe Craig says metal detectors are in the next budget.
“You get the concern well your school is becoming a prison and its unfortunate children shouldn’t have to learn like that. That’s kind of the feeling. You hate to get to that point,” Craig explains.
Middle schools are not in the budget but Craig says he anticipates they will here soon.
