LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY)- Lafayette police said a 68-year-old Breaux Bridge man is dead after firearm discharged inside a truck, which led to a crash in a park.
At about 1:36 p.m. Monday, Lafayette Police responded to a local park in the 1600 block of E. University Ave. in reference to a deceased male inside of a wrecked vehicle.
“It was learned that the victim was driving the vehicle when a passenger inside accidentally discharged a firearm striking the victim which caused him to wreck the vehicle,” the department said.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
He has been identified as 68-year-old Larry Chiasson, of Breaux Bridge. The suspect, 18-year-old Dawson Mullen, of Breaux Bridge, has been arrested for negligent homicide and is being booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center.
The investigation remains ongoing, authorities said.
Stan Adams saw the crash on his way to Broussard.
“I just saw the truck coming from must of been the sidewalk by the shell station, and it just flew across all the traffic,” he told News 10. “I don’t know how he didn’t get hit by the cross traffic. But he flew and jumped down here and crashed into the little bathroom right here.”
