LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) – Lafayette firefighters are at the scene of a commercial fire.

The fire occurred at the old Coburn’s building, which is now vacant, on Grant St.

Firefighters say witnesses reported smoke coming from one of the vacant buildings.

A small fire was found inside and firefighters extinguished it. Damages only affected the original building that was on fire.

Firefighters confirmed there were clothing and personal care items in the building suggesting that individuals had been sleeping inside.

Firefighters spoke to an individual, who is homeless, and they said that at least five people had been sleeping there and a fire was started inside the building last night in an effort to keep warm.

It was not extinguished and burned through the wooden floor.
