UPDATE 1/23/23 1:54 P.M.: The victim has been identified as Zaveon Willis, 20, of Lafayette.

ORIGINAL 1/22/23: LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) – The Lafayette Police Department is on the scene of a homicide, according to the Lafayette Police Department (LPD).

LPD said that around 11:30 a.m. on Jan. 22, LPD responded to the 100 block of Railroad St. in reference to shots fired.

After responding to the scene, officers located one victim with multiple gunshot wounds.

LPD said that it was then determined that the victim was dead and a crime scene was established.

News 10 spoke with Ravis Martinez, president of the NAACP Lafayette branch, who said the victim is his nephew. He said Sunday morning’s senseless death has not only impacted him but the community.

“And really just the community is suffering through it seems like week after week, day after day our community is suffering from gun violence,” Martinez said.

Martinez described the gun violence Lafayette has been seeing as holding the community hostage. He said the lack of resources contributes to the violence like today’s murder.

“It puts the community, almost holds the community at hostage,” Martinez said. “One thing we know is that we don’t have enough resources for our community, for our law enforcement, but also for our youth.”

Martinez said the murder of his nephew really hit close to home and says something must be done soon because gun violence can happen to anyone.

“This actually senseless death impacted me personally,” Martinez said. “My sister’s, this was my sister’s oldest son. One of my sister’s oldest sons who passed away today tragically. I stated a little earlier, there’s over 321 people that lost their lives senselessly in America today. One of those was my family member. Tomorrow it could be your family member.”
