Lafayette Library President Joseph Gordon-Wiltz submits letter of resignation

LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) Following growing controversy surrounding a Drag Queen Story Time event scheduled for early October at the Lafayette Public Library, Board of Control President Joseph Gordon-Wiltz has submitted his letter of resignation, according to library board members.

Gordon-Wiltz, who is an appointee of Mayor-President Joel Robideaux, dated the resignation effective immediately, board members tell KLFY.

The e-mail from Gordon-Wiltz reads:

“Good afternoon, Mr. Robideaux.

I respectfully tender my resignation from the Lafayette Public Library Board of Control, effective immediately. In light of the pending response to the request for information regarding library programming, should you need any further information from me once Library Director Teresa Elberson produces an official response, then do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you for allowing me the awesome opportunity to represent your interests on the Board.

Mayor-President Joel Robideaux sent Gordon-Wiltz an e-mail asking him about the various Library programs. The e-mail reads:

As my appointee to the Library Board…
Please provide me with the following information as it relates to Library programs:
·       A comprehensive explanation of how programming is decided, to include, but not limited to:
o   Is there a programming team?
§  If so, do they simply make recommendations or do they have some level of authority?
§  If so, who do they answer to?
§  If so, are there Minutes for the meetings?
o   Is the Board involved in programming?
o   How are recommended ages determined for programs?
o   Is there any subject matter that is automatically denied from programming?
·       A list of requested programs that were denied since January 2016. (please include any documentation (emails, etc) of those discussions)
·       Any and all correspondence (written or electronic) of Board members and Library Staff regarding a Drag Queen Storytime program (no date range) (I’ve copied IS&T to inform them of this request).
·       Any and all documentation on file related to Drag Queen Storytime program.
Lastly, please also provide me with information regarding any subject-matter “filters” placed on computers used in the Libraries and who makes that decision.
Thank you,

Gordon-Wiltz was appointed as Board President by Library Board of Control members last November. His term would’ve been up in October of this year.

“I’ve enjoyed working with him and I think the other board members have too. He brought wisdom and a different perspective to the Library Board. I had the greatest respect for his opinion, I sought his opinion about a lot of different things. He just brought a lot to the board and I was just excited he was the appointment,” said Teresa Elberson, Director of the Lafayette Public Library System.
