The Lafayette Fire Department will offer and install free smoke alarms systems designed to alert the deaf and hearing impaired.

They are provided with the help of a fire prevention and Safety Grant from FEMA.

The alarms alert homeowners through light, sound, and movement rather than just sound like traditional smoke detectors.

“We are very excited about our Hearing Impaired Safety Solution Program and the positive impact it will have on the deaf and hard of hearing community. Smoke alarms save lives. The special fire safety devices to be installed to those qualifying City of Lafayette citizens will provide assurance of early detection in case there’s a fire,” said Lafayette Fire Chief Robert Benoit.
