Jefferson Davis, La. (KLFY)  – State Police say a mother, with her four young children in the vehicle, crashed from being impaired.

Additionally, the three youngest children were unrestrained in the vehicle, police say.

One child received moderate injuries and burns, after the vehicle became engulfed in flames.  The other three received minor injuries, police say.

State Police responded to the crash around 12:35 a.m., Sunday that occurred on US Hwy 165 south of LA Hwy 101 in Jefferson Davis Parish.

Police say the crash involved a Buick van, driven by 29 year old Kate Elizabeth Davis which was travelling northbound on US Hwy 165 when Davis lost control and exited the right side of the roadway.

After the vehicle exited the roadway, it entered a ditch and collided with a culvert before becoming airborne, hitting a ditch and becoming fully engulfed in flames after this sequence of events, police say.

A good samaritan stopped at the crash site and removed the children from the burning car and, in doing so, received burns to his leg.

An eight year old male was transported to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Lafayette for treatment of his injuries.

The other children in the vehicle are identified as a one year old male, two year old male, and a five year old male.  Police say they were transported to Lake Charles Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Davis was arrested and charged with DWI 3rd, DWI with child endangerment, resisting arrest by fighting, resisting arrest by giving false information, improper lane usage, and no child restraint (three counts).

She was booked into the Jefferson Davis Detention Center.

The Department of Child and Family Services was contacted and responded to the incident.
