An Iowa man is facing hate crime charges for making racial slurs at a deputy.

On Monday at about 8 p.m., Jefferson Davis Parish Sheriff’s deputies were called to 20174 Bourque Road on a complaint of a vehicle theft.

When they arrived, they encountered Phillip Paul Bourgeois, 51, who was living on the property. Deputies said Bourgeois appeared highly intoxicated and “continuously made racial comments toward one of the deputies,” the department said.

Bourgeois was then arrested on a warrant for failure to pay child support, resisting arrest and hate crimes.

He was booked into the Jefferson Davis Parish Jail with no bond set as of this morning.
