JEANERETTE, La. (KLFY) — UPDATE, 11:13 a.m.: Mac’s Sugar City Market, the only supermarket in Jeanerette, is shut down after an overnight fire. The fire happened just one week after another historic building in downtown Jeanerette was demolished after catching on fire.
The Mac’s building itself has been a staple in the Jenerette community for decades. It’s also the only supermarket in Jeanerette. Mayor Carol Bourgeois says residents will now have to travel to Baldwin or New Iberia to shop for groceries.
“This is going to impact our residents greatly as being the one and only supermarket in the city as well as employment,” Carol Bougeois said.
Jacobia Proctor, a Mac’s employee, said he found out the building was on fire when he arrived for work.
He had only been employed there for six months.
“I don’t have transportation so it will be hard on me,” Proctor explained. “A lot of people don’t have transportation so it will affect a lot of families.”
Willie Poledor has lived in Jeanerette for over 70 years. He said he walks down Main street and shops at the market every day. He said losing the market will not only impact the city of Jeanerette but its community members as well, specifically the elderly.
“That’s going to be a serious blow to Jenerette. With the price of gas you have to go to New Iberia for everything and a lot of people don’t have transportation,” Poledor said. “I hope to see more businesses come to Jenerette. That would really help the economy.”
Clarence Clark, St. Mary Parish Fire Chief District 11 told News 10 the store can be salvaged. However, the process could take six months to a year.
