The City of New Iberia plans to build a memorial park in honor of one of their own famous artist.

The George Rodrigue Memorial Park will be built 100 blocks of East Main Street.

“Coming down the main street you’ll see the big blue dog sculpture there in honor of George. And we’re just excited about it,” says Paul Schexnayder, the chairman for the park.

George’s son Jacque Rodrigue says, “New Iberia has always been greased dad and I think the park is just the latest example of how proud of the community is of their native son.”

Rodrigue passed away in 2013.

The last painting he was working on is on display at the Bayou Teche Museum.

Organizers say the park is a more active way to celebrate Rodrigue’s memory.

“We will have space for parties, fundraiser, art walks will be a big part of it. That’s a big part of the George Rodrigue foundations mission is art and children and all that. So we will have one display for children that’s a big part of the George Rodrigue foundations mission is art and children and all that. So we will have one display for children during our walk here.” says Schexnayder.
