NEW IBERIA, La. (KLFY) – State Police have identified the person who died in a crash on Loreauville Road earlier today as Jody Charpentier, 58, of Franklin.

Charpentier was pronounced dead at the scene by the Iberia Parish Coroner’s Office.

The crash happened shortly after 11 a.m. when Jesse Romero, 36, of Hondo, Texas, was driving a 2001 Chevrolet truck westbound in the 3500 block of Loreauville Road.

For unknown reasons, Romero crossed into the eastbound lane and hit Charpentier’s 2007 Toyota Sienna, according to Master Trooper Brooks David.

Romero was not wearing a seat belt and suffered critical injuries. He was taken to a local hospital.

Charpentier was wearing a seat belt but died due to injuries suffered in the crash.

Impairment is unknown at this time, and toxicology samples were taken from both drivers, the results of which are pending. The crash remains under investigation.

David said Louisiana State Police Troop I, which patrols most of Acadiana, has investigated 15 fatal crashes resulting in 20 deaths so far in 2017.
