Today is Giving Tuesday, an International day of giving.
It’s always the Tuesday after Thanksgiving.
There are so many local non-profits that participate in Giving Tuesday – including Family Promise of Acadiana.
Along with 400 volunteers, the organization helps homeless families in Lafayette find permanent housing.
Director Renee Menard says 85% of the families who come through their program have graduated into permanent housing.
And the non-profit employs 92% of the families that come in.
This year, the shelter is asking people to donate gift cards or pre-paid cards.
The cards will go to families as they leave the shelter to get supplies for their new homes.
“When the families moved out of the shelter, we helped provide their new house. We want to be able to stock their freezers with meat, we want to be able to buy the little things that maybe we don’t get donated that you need in the house, like bathroom rugs or shower curtains or things like that.” said Menard.
Family Promise has been helping families in the community for the past 15 years.
They were the first shelter in Lafayette to take in families.
If you would like to donate to Family Promise of Acadiana, you can either mail your gift card or drop the donation off at The Hut on Leonie Street.
