Escaped inmate captured, girlfriend arrested hours later on accessory charges


LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY)- UPDATE: Authorities have located and arrested Jones on Cora and Willow streets. 

Jones’ girlfriend, Desara Edmond, has been charged with accessory after the fact, Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesman John Mowell said. 

ORIGINAL: A search for an escaped inmate is happening right now in the area of St. Antoine and Voohies Streets in Lafayette. 

Authorities say Markell Jones, 27, was being brought in from West Carroll Parish when he escaped.

Two schools are on a precautionary lock down while authorities search the area.   Those schools are Myrtle Place Elementary and Lafayette Middle School. 

Deputies are asking if you see someone suspicious near the railroad tracks near Morgan St. to University Avenue to call 911.

Jones was arrested last August on charges of aggravated kidnapping, armed robbery, possession of a firearm by a person convicted of certain felonies, illegal possession of a stolen firearm cruelty to a juvenile, Criminal Trespass and Probation and Parole.
