DOTD says crews will clean and repair boat launch

Local

LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) – The Bayou Vermilion District’s North Landing Boat Launch sits below one of the bridges that had to be widening for the I-10 widening project.

Workers finished most of the bridge work and moved their heavy equipment.

But Bayou Vermilion District C.E.O. Dr. David Cheramie said they left behind metal pipes, construction debris and trash.

“Some of the things we can’t move actually like some big beams and some pipes that are too heavy for our crew but some of the things we could pick up, that’s no problem,” Cheramie said.

DOTD District Administrator Bill Oliver said the contractor isn’t completely finished yet.

“They’ve got decks to pour and they’re going to have more decks and piles to drive and things to do overhead so you can’t have people there,” Oliver explained.

He said a meeting will be set up with the contractor and Cheramie to talk about getting the site cleaned up. Oliver said the contractor will pay for any damage done to the boat launch.

“As part of the work he has to take care of everything around it and so that’s part of the project,” Oliver said.

“We can work this out. That’s no problem,” Cheramie said. “Nobody has to sue anybody to get this fixed.”

The boat launch had to be closed in June 2017.

A section of boat ramp that should be under water is covered in mud.

Cheramie said the river has a natural tendency to flow to the left of the launch. But because there’s been no boat traffic or crews doing maintenance on the ramp, mother nature took over.

“There’s no way you could get a boat in and out of here safety because the bank has rebuilt the way it wants to do so there’s no way you can get a boat in or out of here safely,” he said.

Cheramie said he doesn’t blame the DOTD for dirt buildup on the launch.

The DOTD hopes all the bridge work near the launch is done by early fall at the latest.

News 10 talked to Cheramie on Tuesday afternoon.

He said since our interview with him crews have started cleaning up the site.

Cheramie also said the contractor has reached out to him to set up a meeting to resolve any problems.
