Dial Dalfred: LPSS disbandment of recess detention

Local

LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) – The mother of a Lafayette Parish Public School student is upset tonight after she says her child was denied due process and punished outside the legal parameters of the school district.

The Lafayette Parish School System Student / Parent Handbook is about 55 pages of do’s and don’ts of the school system; including how a child should be disciplined, and in this case— how they shouldn’t.

The mother complaining is choosing to remain anonymous because of her profession but wants her concerns to be heard so parents can be aware and the school system be held accountable.

The Lafayette Parish Schools handbook clearly states on page 21, article 8: denial of special privileges is reasonable disciplinary action, but not to withhold recess.

“Several of our (LPSS) principals were unaware of the details of the policy and allowing recess detention.”

Chief Administrative Officer Joe Craig says, when the matter was brought to administration, schools principals were notified they were violating district policy.

But there was a revision made to the policy on October 3rd to allow “limited choice recess”.

“For minor infractions, a student can be assigned a limited choice recess. Whereas, they don’t necessarily run and play with the rest of the kids on the campus but they can still choose activities they want to be involved in but it’s away from the other kids.”Craig says physical activity is a part of a students day and good for their health, which is what led to the
end of lunch detention.”We still want them to get out and release some extra energy, get out and stretch and that’s good for them also. This restricted choice still allows them to get the exercise but teachers can still use that as a management tool for minor infractions.”

If there’s a case of lunch detention in your Lafayette Parish school, you’re encouraged to notify the director of elementary schools, that information can be found here.
