Dial Dalfred: Lafayette traffic light timing

Local

LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) – They tell us when to go, when to stop, even when to slow down and take our time.

We’re talking about traffic lights all around the world.

But here in the Hub City, some residents say one signal at a busy intersection has drivers applying the brakes way too often.

Johnston Street, Ambassador Caffery, and Kaliste Saloom are all among the streets Lafayette natives know to avoid during rush hour.

Adding to that bumper to bumper headache is the timing of some traffic signals.

The turn signal at Kaliste Saloom and Camellia was brought to our attention by an irate driver who claims he had to wait three light cycles to turn left of Camellia.

We timed the light at noon on Thursday to see just how long drivers were given to turn left.

The light at the intersection stays green for about eleven seconds and then yellow for the next five.

When the light turns red, you can still see several drivers in the intersection avoiding another light cycle.

We asked drivers how they feel about traffic lights around Lafayette?

Tim Zittel said, “They stay red way too long, definitely something needs to change.”

We asked another woman what she would like to see done?

“Stay green longer. Simple”, she said.

City-parish transportation engineer, Warren Abadie says, they gather the data, and traffic patterns of adjacent intersections to determine the amount time each light stays red, green, or yellow.

“Each one of our traffic signals is connected through LUS Fiber so, we can view it from the office, change it from the office, we can view the statistics about each traffic signal from the office”, Abadie explained.
