A couple accused of starting a house fire Wednesday in St. Martin Parish told detectives they started the fire because they were angry at the home’s owner.

The fire, in the 1100 block of Bayou Portage Road in St. Martinville, happened before dawn Wednesday, according to the Louisiana Office of State Fire Marshal.

25-year-old Brandon Hornton was booked into the St. Martin Parish Jail on one count each of aggravated arson, criminal trespass and possession of schedule II narcotics.

33-year-old Ashley Girouard was booked on one count each of aggravated arson and criminal trespass.

Both were also booked by the St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office on several outstanding warrants.

In an interview with LAOSFM investigators, Hornton confessed to setting the fire by lighting clothes on fire.

He then told deputies that he did it out of anger at the home’s owner and his friends who he said tease and stole from him.

Hornton also told investigators that his girlfriend helped him.

While Girouard admitted to investigators that she went inside the residence with Hornton, she denied helping him set the fire, the State Fire Marshal said.
