Carencro man’s family questions ‘accidental drowning’ ruling

Local
CARENCRO, La. (KLFY) – The family of 32-year-old Christopher Thibodeaux, whose body was found in the Vermilion River on Tuesday, is speaking out to News 10.

The Lafayette Parish Coroner’s Office has ruled his death an accidental drowning, and do not suspect foul play.

However, because his body was found in the river near a family cabin, and he was an excellent swimmer, she says something is just not adding up.

“We just want to know more. We just want to know, why so many things was overlooked,” said Zenobia Cox.

She describes her brother as someone who was known for his big smile and loved by many.

“They (Coroner’s Office) ruled it as ‘accidental.’ The family feels it’s foul play, so we’re not accepting that. As you guys may know, the body was found in the exact same place that they searched several days,” said Cox.

She says her family wants answers

The area where authorities were searching was near the Thibodeaux’s family cabin, so Chris was well acquainted with the area.
Also, she describes Chris as a good swimmer.

“We have closure because you know we have the body, but we don’t have closure based on the information we received,” said Cox.

She wonders and questions why after days of authorities searching the same location, why the body would suddenly show up days after in the exact same place they were in fact searching all along.

“So now it’s just putting my little brother to rest, so we can move on.
It’s sad that it had to happen right before the holidays. So at this time, we just want to be able to put this to rest, and give him the proper burial that he deserved, so we can move on,” said Cox.

Her message is to not take any day for granted. And to hold your loved ones extra tight, especially during this holiday season.

“You never know what’s going to happen, tomorrow’s not promised.
Life is short. Just embrace each other, and be there to support each other and be a family. Like a family is supposed to be,” said Cox.

When Zenobia spoke to us Wednesday evening, she was traveling from California to be with her family.

She says the family is planning a possible balloon launch in his honor on Friday at the place Christopher’s body was found.
He will be laid to rest on Saturday.
