While most people who attend Mardi Gras have the worries of parking, a sober ride, or bad weather conditions, having a camper or RV at Cajun Field can be a convenience.
“Mardi Gras in Lafayette is awesome, so being able to bring my RV here and have all the comforts of home is just a wonderful experience.” said Keith Simon, Breaux Bridge resident.
Keith Simon sets up his camper at festivals all across the country, and has been bringing his RV to the Mardi Gras parade in Lafayette for years. According to Randall Mann, the treasurer for the Greater Southwest Mardi Gras Association, Simon isn’t the only one who comes back to Lafayette every year.
“We have people who have been parking with us for over 20 years and what’s always really cool is we have a lot of out of town people who come in. We have people from Indiana, Ohio, Wisconsin and I get calls from people all over the country looking for an RV space.” said Mann
The RV spots are good for five days of celebrating. There are 70 spots available along the parade route for $850, and spots along the perimeter for $550. Mann says the convenience is what people look for, but lasting friendships is often what they leave with.
“They end up combining their spaces and end up partying together. So I’ve got tons of stories of people becoming friends year after year after year and they want to make sure they get their spots together.” said Mann
Many of the campers agreed that a perk of being on the fairgrounds was how family friendly it is. John Lain has been bringing his family to camp out for the past eight years. But the Lain family doesn’t have your ordinary RV, they have a mobile party-den that Lain and his son built together.
“We like to have the convenience of home here for a couple of days. We call it home for a few days.” said Lain
The trailer is equipped with a full kitchen, three mounted TV’s, a slushy machine and railing for safety of course.
“I think everyone was just fascinated with the trailer itself, we built this basically from scratch in the shop .” said Aaron Lain
