UPDATE: LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY)- State Police have released an initial statement on the investigation.

According to State Police Troop I spokesman Thomas Gossen, Lafayette police were executing a warrant for attempted murder when the suspect exited his vehicle, which was seen on Amber Street) and ran two blocks down Pont Des Mouton Road before an “altercation with police where one officer shot the suspect.”

The suspect is in the hospital in critical condition. No officers were hurt.

State Police Troop I’s initial statement said:

On July 15, 2020, the Louisiana State Police Bureau of Investigations was requested by the Lafayette Police Department to investigate an officer-involved shooting involving their department. Louisiana State Police is the lead investigating agency.

The preliminary investigation revealed that at approximately 5:30 p.m., a traffic stop was conducted by Lafayette City Police which led to a foot pursuit. The foot pursuit continued to the area of St. Bernadette Drive where an altercation took place between officers and the suspect. During the course of the interaction, the suspect was shot and was transported to a local hospital where he remains in critical condition. No officers were injured during the incident. 

This is an active investigation and no further information is available at this time.

State Police Troop I said it would not comment on if the suspect had a weapon and shot at Lafayette Police until they could prove it.

ORIGINAL STORY: LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY)- Lafayette police are investigating an officer-involved shooting on Bernadette Drive.

Lafayette Police Department spokesman Sgt. Wayne Griffin said officers were attempting to deliver a warrant when a suspect shot at them.

Police have not confirmed injuries as of 6 p.m. The investigation will be turned over to State Police, Griffin said.
