(The Daily Advertiser) – Deputies discovered an inmate dead in his cell Saturday from an apparent suicide.

Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesman John Mowell said deputies conducted a wellness check just before 5 p.m. and found 25-year-old Kristopher Nelams, of Opelousas, unresponsive.

Nelams had been held in the correctional center since his arrest on May 19 on a domestic abuse battery charge.

The inmate’s body has been taken to the Lafayette Parish Coroner’s Office. The Sheriff’s Office is awaiting a formal determination as to the cause of his death, Mowell said. His family has been notified.

Detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding Nelams’ death and further information will be provided when it becomes available.
