UPDATE: A theft suspect is back in custody after leading Lafayette police on a foot chase Tuesday evening.

The suspect was pulled over during a traffic stop in the 200 block of Hopkins Street.

Police say he then ran several blocks before he was arrested.

Residents who live in a neighborhood near the corner of Mudd and Gladys Avenue, say the suspect broke into their home while fleeing police.

One woman says she was inside her home when a man broke into her house through the back door.

She later learned he was a fugitive running from police.

She did not want to be on camera, however News Ten talked to a man who saw it all unfold.

“I was coming to visit my mother, and I was stopped by an entourage of cops around the block surrounding it. They told me that I couldn’t get to my mother’s house because there was a man on the loose with a gun,” Chris Miller said.

That man was being chased by Lafayette Police after he fled officers during a traffic stop when officers learned he was driving a stolen motorcycle.

When they handcuffed him, the suspect took off running all the way to a neighborhood several blocks away, where Miller was trying to visit his family.

Miller says nearly 20 police cars surrounded the street.

“There were undercover units, the regular units, dog units,” he said.

He says soon after officers started searching the neighborhood, it appeared that the police dogs caught the suspect’s scent.

“About 30 minutes later, I’m still trying to get to the house, and I hear the dogs barking. They apparently found him inside the house,” Miller said.

News Ten spoke with the homeowner, who says the suspect broke into her home through the back door.

Although she did not wish to be on camera, she did say officers found him inside, re-captured him, and escorted him safely out the front door.

“The cops went in and got him. I guess he gave up quietly,” Miller added. “I think he was just trying to get to safety. I don’t think he was out to hurt nobody.”

The suspect remains in police custody.

No injuries were reported in this incident.
