Advocates are raising funds to send children with Muscular Dystrophy to a special summer camp

Local advocates are raising funds and awareness for Muscular Dystrophy in efforts to send kids to a special camp this summer.

The ‘Chelbug Festival’ was inspired by Chelsea Carriere. She was a Muscular Dystrophy patient and also an advocate for other patients.

Claire Carriere said her older sister, Chelsea,  was diagnosed at birth with the life expectancy of about six months. Everything that she was involved in, every dream that she had, every profession that she wanted to be, was just geared around advocating for individuals with disabilities, but mostly advocating for herself, said Carriere

Every second of her 27 years is described as doing for others. It’s a legacy community members are continuing on. “They’re starting a very important conversation. because we loved Chelsea so much, it’s great to see something she was so passionate about being spread throughout Acadiana,” Carriere

Longtime-childhood friends, like Michael Vincent,  started fundraisers for patients, holding on to her spirit. “If you did not see her exterior features, you would not know she had a disability,” said Vincent.

They took many of her poems and artwork and transformed it into a book to sell. “She always strived to be independent, but at the same time, Chelsea always wanted to help everybody else. We definitely wanted to continue that,” Vincent added.

It’s a piece of her, they believe will help many others get through hard times. “She did that through her words, her actions, the way that she lived her everyday life,” said Carriere

This is what launched the birth of Chelbug Fest 2019.  The festival will raise funds for Camp Starlite. Camp Starlite is the summer camp for kids with Muscular Dystrophy.

The event will include; a chili cook-off, live performances, fun jump, yard games, the Easter Bunny, Silent Auction and more.
