"This is your prison. This is your tax dollars. And I am damned upset about the condition it is in!"
Harsh words from Iberia Parish Sheriff Louis Ackal regarding the state of the Parish Jail.
Vents are molded, pipes are leaking, the sewage system constantly backs up, some doors don't lock, showers are filthy and the control panel that oversees every move inmates makes barely works.
Most of the equipment has not been replaced since the jail was built in 1991.
The sheriff's office receives $860,000 annually to operate the facility.
Preliminary reports by an engineering firm show the facility could use up to two million dollars in improvements.
