If you are in a house, get down to the lowest level and into an interior room such as a closet or bathroom.
If you are in school, go quickly to an inside hallway on the lowest floor. Do not seek shelter in a gym, auditorium, or other area with wide, free space roofs because they can easily collapse.
If you are in an office building, go to the inside hallway or lower floor.
If you are in open country, move away from the approaching tornado's path at a right angle. If there is no time to escape lie flat in the nearest ditch or other depression.
If you are in a mobile home, get out at once. Take cover in a strong building, ditch, or ravine. Do not stay in a mobile home if a tornado threatens.
If you are in a vehicle, get out and move to a sturdy building or lie in a ditch. DO NOT seek shelter under an overpass due to increased suction.
