University of Louisiana at Lafayette fans turned out in big numbers to support the home team for tonight's season opener against rivals Southern University Baton Rouge. In fact, 36,170 people turned out...making this game the third largest all-time home attendance for the Ragin' Cajuns. UL's Assistant Director of Marketing and Promotions says the university is more than able to accommodate these types of crowds.
"We've just now added six-thousand brand new seats on the south end zone and that's going to have a big impact. It used to be a hill, and with weather like today's where it's been raining during the day and it got kind of muddy that's not a problem these are all nice seats with nice backs on them too.""
The sold out game was expected to bring record numbers of people in to Lafayette and the city is projected to profit upwards two and a half million dollars in revenue. This number is a result of supporters from both teams coming out to support and enjoy the tailgating festivities which included food vendors and live music.Despite the rain, fans and alumni of all ages came out to have a good time.
"I graduated from this school, I met my bride that I married, this is our thirty-eighth weeding anniversary, this weekend Labor Day weekend. So we came to support the Cajuns from Baton Rouge, we came to see this team play, go Cajuns." said David Patout a graduate of University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
