SARASOTA COUNTY, FL (WFLA) -

Northbound lanes on Interstate 75 between Bee Ridge Road and Fruitville Road closed Wednesday morning after an accident involving a tanker. Two lanes have re-opened as of 4:30 p.m. Officials say the roadway  fully re-opened at about 8 p.m.

About 20 emergency units were at the crash scene removing fuel from the tanker. A crane was brought in later to remove it.

Officials say the tanker was driving southbound and made a dramatic left turn off the interstate, into the median and crashing into a ditch along the northbound lanes. He tried to avoided hitting other cars. The crash happened at about 5:42 a.m. Four other vehicles got into an accident soon afterwards.

The tanker spilled an estimated 250-500 gallons of gasoline into the ditch along the interstate. It was carrying about 8700 on board. The crews are cleaning up the spill. The tanker driver 71-year-old Thomas Grattan of Brooksville was airlifted, and an ambulance took the pickup driver to a hospital as well.

Grattan is currently in serious condition.

Try to avoid this stretch of the highway. Officials are diverting traffic at Bee Ridge Road.
