Home owner fatally shoots burglar

Updated:
Lafayette police have released the name of a suspected burglar who was fatally shot by an unidentified homeowner.

According to police, the suspect has been identified as 46 year old Ramsey Demouchet of Lafayette Police say the home owner saw Demouchet going into his house in the one hundred block of California Street.

The homeowner was across the street, but he grabbed a gun and confronted Demouchet from outside a window. According to police reports, the homeowner fired two shots through the window.

Police say the suspect Demouchet then ran out of the house, was shot at two more times, before collapsing in the backyard, where he was found by police and neighbor Calvin Francis.

"About eleven o'clock last night got into the house was home inside with my family heard someone yell outside. Proceeded to go out the front door to go and see what it was before I could get outside heard a gunshot so at that time I went ahead and called 911 Lafayette PD en route. While I'm on the phone with the 911 dispatcher I heard a second shot told the dispatcher exactly what was going on she said ok I'll have the police on their way, while waiting for the police to get here the dogs started barking and running towards the backyard was trying to make the decision if I was going to come outside or not didn't heard a third a gun shot and at that time I called 911 again at that time I got on the back line talked to Lafayette PD dispatcher advised me that police were in the area and were coming so I went ahead and stayed inside" said Francis.

After a fourth shot, Francis says, he finally came out of his house and found the lifeless suspect with his head against this fence only inches from a live electrical wire.

I have this electrical hot shot wire because of my dogs to make sure they don't get out of the yard from the sounds of the guy yelling last night it sounds like he touched this trying to get out of the yard and I think that's what prevented him and he stayed in the yard there."

Police say the homeowner was taken into custody, interviewed and then released. He hasn't been charged in the fatal shooting, but authorities say the investigation continues.
