Two arrested in violent home invasion

Authorities in Acadia Parish have arrested two suspects in connection with a home invasion and attempted second degree murder that was reported to the Acadia Parish Sheriff's Office shortly after 1:00 p.m. Thursday afternoon.

According to Acadia Parish Sheriff Wayne Melancon while officers were responding to the incident that occurred in the 5000 block of the Eunice Iota Hwy they observed and attempted to stop the suspect vehicle a black Chevy S­10 pickup that was occupied by two white male suspects. Deputies advised that the suspects fled and deputies then began a vehicle pursuit that ended in the 3600 block of the Iota Eunice Hwy and home of one of the suspects. The two suspects then exited their vehicle and deputies then began a foot chase into a wooded area that extended approximately 10 miles. One of the suspects was immediately apprehended.

The second suspect fled into the wooded area and was apprehended without incident six hours later.

Melancon stated that the first suspect has been identified as 37 year old Billy West of the 3600 block of the Eunice Iota Hwy, Iota. The second suspect was identified as 26 year old James Rozas of the 5000 block of the Eunice Iota Hwy, Iota.

Investigating officers advised that West and Rozas drove to a residence in the 5000 block of the Eunice Iota Hwy and made force entry. Rozas forcefully entered the residence and assault a female who was able to free herself and run to a neighboring home for assistance. Rozas then began fighting with a male subject also in the residence.

A short time later West entered the residence and also began assault the male subject. The male subject sustained cuts to his back and hands. He was transported to Eunice Memorial Hospital where he was stabilized and transferred to an Opelousas Hospital. His injuries are considered to be non­life threatening.

Melancon stated that West and Rozas have been placed in the Acadia Parish Jail charged with home invasion, criminal damage to property and attempted 2 nd degree murder.


Bond has not been set at this Sheriff Melancon thanked the Eunice Marshal's Office; Eunice Police Department; Louisiana State Police; Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and members of his department for joining forces and working together to arrests these two individuals.


The investigation is continuing.
