A recent national poll shows Louisiana schools are the fourth worst in the United States. BESE leaders say the problem is low expectations. BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - The leader of Louisiana's state school board offered a full-throated defense of the Common Core education standards, calling it a higher level of accountability for public school students.

Chas Roemer, president of the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education, said Monday that the multi-state English and math standards will allow Louisiana to compete globally and compare student performance across states.

Roemer accused Gov. Bobby Jindal of creating a "fiasco" by taking steps against Common Core in Louisiana. He told the Baton Rouge Press Club that Jindal's actions were designed to bolster a 2016 presidential campaign, rather than to improve education.

Jindal has suspended testing contracts to keep the state from using Common Core-tied testing material. He opposes the multi-state standards as an Obama administration effort to federalize education.
