Store Owner Killed in Ville Platte Robbery

Updated:
59-year-old Ann Nguyen was fatally shot yesterday at K&T's Meat Market and Grocery in Ville Platte. Her son James says she had been the owner of the store for nearly a decade.

A number of law enforcement agencies covered Lincoln Road in Ville Platte Monday afternoon. A fatal shooting at K&T's Meat Market and Grocery left one female store manager dead.

Ville Platte Police Chief Neal Lartigue said the suspect demanded all customers leave the store and the woman was the only victim. "He was in the store at the time and he told them that they better exit the store. At this time, we're unsure if the incident had taken place yet or not," said Lartigue.

Lartigue said a motive has not been identified and he is unsure if anything was taken out of the store.

After receiving information from eyewitnesses, police do have a description of the suspect and the bike he fled on. "It was a blue Schwinn bike. The suspect was wearing a black cap, white t-shirt, a red bandana and camouflage short pants," said Lartigue.

Lartigue adds that police have identified the black male suspect, but still need help in finding him. Ville Platte Mayor Jennifer Vidrine said this is the first homicide this year in the city.

"This is a horrible tragedy for the city and the people who live here. This is our first homicide that we've had in 2014, but we still want the families to know that we will do everything in our legal power to make sure that the suspect comes to justice," said Vidrine.

Vidrine said the city is a place she wants citizens to always feel safe living in.

"We want our business owners to feel safe in their businesses and this is not what the city of Ville Platte is about. We are about a community that's helping each other and loving each other and not trying to destroy each other," said Vidrine.

While the victim's name has not been released at this time her son did release this statement.

"We are deeply saddened and stricken with grief after learning about the sudden and tragic loss of our loved one.

At the moment, our family requests privacy as we cope with the reality that we no longer have a beloved mother, sister and daughter to grace us with her presence in this world. We also call on the public to assist with the ongoing police investigation to apprehend the suspect responsible."

Anyone with information on the homicide is asked to call Ville Platte Police at 363-1313.
