Superintendent Cleared of Battery Complaint

Updated:
KLFY News 10 has learned exclusively from Lafayette City Prosecutor Gary Haynes that the City Prosecutor's Office has refused to accept criminal charges in a battery complaint filed against Lafayette Parish Schools Superintendent Dr. Pat Cooper. This regarding an alleged altercation with school board member Dr. Tehmi Chaisson at the School Board's Central Office this past April. City Prosecutor Haynes released the following statement concerning his decision to refuse charges:

"The battery complaint was forwarded to the City Prosecutor’s Office on April 23, 2014 and refused on July 22, 2014. The Lafayette Police Department did not file charges against anyone due to conflicting statements of eyewitnesses, but compiled a report from the investigation. I concur with the investigating police officer’s findings. Accordingly, this office refused the complaint because the facts, as written by the witnesses, will not reasonably result in a conviction. The prosecution must prove, beyond a reasonable doubt, that the violator used “force or violence” and the conflicting statements preclude such a finding." -LAFAYETTE CITY PROSECUTOR GARY HAYNES
