"Investigators went down to Kaplan, spoke with Mr. Doucette, seized evidence at the scene and Mr. Doucette's vehicle," says State Police Trpr. Brooks David. State police say the 42-year-old Doucette was driving down LA 92 around 5 a.m. on July 7th, when he allegedly struck 30-year-old Lomas from behind.
Lomas, who was riding a bike, was found in a ditch near Mermentau Road about two hours later.
"We would always see him on his bike. He would cut through our yard and ride his bike,” says a neighbor of Lomas.
Neighbors of Lomas say they felt some relief that after more than two weeks a suspect was taken into custody. But one woman, who lives next door to the Lomas', declined to show her face on camera, and told us the neighborhood is at a loss.
"I thought it was heartbreaking. It was awful. He has a family and it's just a terrible situation," says the neighbor.
According to the neighbor, she saw Lomas two days before he was killed—outside his home—where he spent a lot of his time with his family.
"My husband would talk to him a lot. He was always outside playing with his kids," says the neighbor.
She says Lomas was not only a family man, but a reliable neighbor.
"My husband one time he got his car stuck in the yard and he actually towing service, he let us use his towing service with his OnStar to pull it out," says the neighbor.
