THIBODAUX, La. (AP) - As the inshore brown shrimp season closes in Lafourche and Terrebonne parishes, shrimp prices are up.
Shrimpers were getting $9.45 per pound in May for shrimp large enough to comprise 15 or fewer per pound. That's according to statistics compiled by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The same shrimp were going for $7.25 last year and $6.25 just prior to the 2010 BP oil spill.
Smaller shrimp, comprising 41 to 50 per pound, went for $3.75 per pound in May. Last year, they were going for $3, and in 2010 the cost was $2.40.
Danny Babin, owner of Gulf Fish Inc. in Houma, tells The Daily Comet This year's catch was about average, the size was larger than normal and the price has been much higher than normal.
