Lafayette Man Faces Life in Prison Over Weapons Charges

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Baton Rouge-based U.S. Attorney Walt Green's office says a federal jury has convicted a 45-year-old Lafayette man on numerous weapons charges.

Joseph D. Melancon was convicted of conspiring to steal firearms and possess and sell stolen firearms; Other charges on which he was convicted include stealing from a licensed federal firearms dealer and possessing firearms as a convicted felon.

Melancon faces up to life in prison, a fine up to $750,000, restitution to victims, and forfeiture of the proceeds of his criminal activity. His sentencing date has not been set.

Green's office said Melancon and another man burglarized the Hunter's Run Gun Club in Port Allen on the night of April 13, 2012, and stole over thirty firearms. Two other men pleaded guilty in the case.
