EatLafayette kicks off

Many filled the Heymann Performing Arts Center Tuesday afternoon for EatLafayette's kick off gala.

It's an awareness campaign aimed at attracting more locals and visitors to local eateries during the summer slump months. Over fifty locally owned restaurants were in attendance where they showcased delicious cuisine.

Co-Founder of EatLafayette and owner of Charley G's and Social Southern Table and Bar , Charlie Goodson, said it all began a decade ago. "10 years ago three or four restaurant owners and myself approached Gerald Breaux ,President of LCVC at the time, about helping us promote local restaurants," said Goodson.

According to Goodson, the number of restaurants participating in the campaign has grown from 18 to over 80. He said by helping promote locally owned businesses EatLafayette also benefits the city.

"The dollars that are earned in local restaurants stay in town and more dollars stay in Lafayette when you eat in a local restaurant," said Goodson.

Some restaurants that participate in the campaign, such as Deano's Pizza, have been a part of it since it's inception. "Ever since EatLafayette started, Deanos has participated. We feel it's a really great way to showcase Lafayette food," said Karen Metcalf, Owner of Deano's South.

Many who came out to support the campaign such as, Sean Donahue, said it's a great time to promote the diverse food choices found in Lafayette.

"Well I came here to come check it out. It's my first time. It's exciting. We have some good food and some good energy out here. I'm really excited," said Donahue. Goodson said after 10 years, he's extremely proud of this event.

"I'm overwhelmed with it. I really am. I was hoping it would be this successful, but you never know. The local restaurants came aboard. People got behind us and supported it and now we have over 80 restaurants celebrating local ownership," said Goodson.

The EatLafayette campaign lasts through Labor Day. Menu specials during this time can be found at all participating locally owned restaurants.

KLFY is a proud sponsor of the event.
