New Seniors Housing in Kaplan

Updated:
Some residents in Kaplan will soon have a new place to call home. The Diocese of Lafayette is building a new apartment complex for the elderly and disabled.

"Progress, yes, this is what we call progress,” said Kaplan Mayor Kirk Champagne.

Champagne says it's been a long time since Kaplan has seen residential construction. But the foundation is set for the newest multi-occupant housing. Thanks to the Diocese, several residents who are elderly or disabled will have a place to call home—a place fit for them.

"(It’s for) residents in need of a little assistance. It’s a nice place to live where they can roll around in a wheel chair or scooter. There are trees around, it's cool. It’s a nice place,” said Champagne.

This particular project is two years in the making, but it's not the first of its kind for Kaplan, which has a growing need for these types of facilities. Champagne says the town has worked hand in hand with the Dioceses to make sure this project is possible.

"We have a lot of elderly people here in town and a lot who are handicapped, who have needs the Diocese have recognized and addressed,” said Champagne.

The five-acre space will have ten units and room to grow. Although summer rain storms may push things back a bit, Champagne expects completion by the fall.

“(The Diocese has) done projects similar to this in the past and we would love for them to continue and we're so happy that they are,” said Champagne.
