Tornado confirmed in the Garyville area

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - The National Weather Service says an EF-1 tornado touched down in the southeast Louisiana city of Garyville, with the worst damage around the Marathon Petroleum Corp. refinery.

Marathon spokesman Jamal Kheiry says one cooling tower is damaged, closing the processing unit it serves. He says two refinery workers needed minor first aid.

St. John the Baptist Parish spokeswoman Baileigh Rebowe says officials don't have any other reports of injuries. She says the only other reported damage was a few flooded houses.

Meteorologist Fred Zeigler says a survey confirmed a tornado about 150 yards wide, with winds up to nearly 105 mph, hit about 5:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Meteorologist Shawn O'Neil says a bay door was blown in at the Edgard fire station across the Mississippi River from Garyville.
