House agrees to exempt lawmakers from gun limits

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - A measure that would allow legislators to carry concealed weapons in public buildings, except the Louisiana Capitol, is nearing final passage after getting approval from the House.

The House voted 79-12 Tuesday to back the bill by Franklin Sen. Bret Allain, a Republican. Under the bill, lawmakers would be exempt from a law barring concealed weapons in most public buildings.

Like judges and district attorneys, lawmakers would be able to enter courthouses and state offices armed, provided they go through annual training.

A House committee sought to require lawmakers to also go through a psychiatric test to get the privilege, but that requirement was removed on the House floor.

The bill goes back to the Senate for consideration of House changes.
