Duson man arrested for 911 hoax call

On May 16, at Lafayette 911 received a report of a major crash on Interstate 10 in Scott.

The caller reported that occupants of the vehicle involved in the crash were trapped and injuries required the response of Acadian Air Med. Emergency responders from Lafayette Sheriff's Office, Scott Police Department, Scott Fire Department, Lafayette Fire Department Rescue Unit and Acadian Ambulance ground and air units were dispatched. No crash was located on Interstate 10 leading emergency responders to believe the call was a hoax.

The Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office initiated a criminal investigation associated with the 911 call in order to identify the caller responsible for the needless deployment of emergency responders.

On Friday, May 23, Steven S. Baty, w/m, 45 years of age of Duson, LA was arrested by detectives for Criminal Mischief. Baty cooperated with detectives and acknowledged that the 911 call was an intentional hoax, he was then booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center.
