Senate agrees to allow REAL ID driver's licenses

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - The Louisiana Senate has narrowly agreed to repeal a six-year-old law that prohibits state officials from issuing driver's licenses that comply with federally-mandated security features.

Under federal law, REAL ID-compliant licenses will be required to board domestic airline flights by 2016. Without such an ID, passengers will be required to produce a passport or could be subject to intense questioning from airport security. Critics of the REAL ID law have raised privacy concerns.

Senators voted 21-16 to allow compliance with the REAL ID law on a voluntary basis in Louisiana. Drivers who don't want the compliant licensed could opt out.

The bill needed 20 votes to pass. The proposal heads back to the House for consideration of Senate changes.
