Local student competing in national spelling bee

The cities of Lafayette, New Orleans, Hammond, Monroe and Shreveport will have a local student to cheer for when they compete this week in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. 12-year-old Amelia Hebert, a sixth-grade student at Cathedral-Carmel School in Lafayette will be among five people from Louisiana competing in the bee beginning Tuesday afternoon. Around 280 students will compete from the 50 states and the territories of American Samoa, Guam and Puerto Rico for this year's title.
