The Blackham Coliseum was the home of the 28th annual Zydeco Extravaganza . The annual event is a celebration of zydeco music with live music, food and fun for the entire family.
Although originally held in Opelousas, officials decided to bring the event back to Lafayette, where it originally started in 1987.
With performances on both indoor and outdoor stages, Opelousas Mayor Don Cravins says the consistency of quality music is how the event is able to remain a staple in the zydeco culture.
"Every year what we have done in the good times and the bad times we always tried to bring people the best in what we though in zydeco music and it's a way to keep the culture moving and kind of keep the music alive. Of course over the years we have had several zydeco Grammy winners and I think that also has rejuvenated the interest in the music."
