Residents in Ile Des Cannes say they heard several shots ring out shortly before midnight on Monday.
A woman we spoke with, who chose not to be identified, says she saw the male victim laying underneath a bush at the intersection of Sweetbriar Street and Scotsdale Streets—clinging to life. "I came over. I checked his pulse. He had a strong pulse, but he was gasping for air," said the woman.
The woman said he was bleeding profusely from what appeared to be a number of bullet wounds. "He took maybe three good breaths, gurgling. After that he took one short breath and then he passed away," said the woman.
Lafayette Sheriff's Office spokesman Capt. Kip Judice says they received a call about the body around 12:44 a.m. on Tuesday. They've reportedly identified the man as a resident of the complex, who was living just feet away from where he was shot. He said they're now waiting to notify his parents in Mexico and interview witnesses.
"It doesn't appear as if someone randomly just drove by and shot this gentleman. It looks like some type of event here that was supposed to happen.
Whether it was a discussion or a meeting of some sort we don’t know. But, we're going to continue to investigate that," said Judice. For now the woman says she doesn't feel safe stepping out of her house.
"It's dangerous back here—it really is," said the woman. Judice said authorities will continue to beef up patrols in the area. This housing project has a reputation for trouble, but Judice said it's been at least two years since anyone has been murdered at the development.
Officials are hoping an autopsy will provide them with more leads. Anyone with information on the shooting is encouraged to call Crimestoppers at 232-Tips.
