Officers honored at Police Memorial Day Ceremony

Members of the Lafayette Police Department and a number of surrounding agencies gathered to observe Police Memorial week.

It's an annual event held to honor Acadiana Law Enforcement Officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty. A motorcade of police traveled the streets of Lafayette in honor of the fallen law enforcement.

Lafayette Police Chief Jim Craft said the fallen officers remembered at Saint Barnabas Episcopal Church all date back to the 1920's. "19 officers who were killed in the line of duty in the Acadiana area dating all the way back to 1926 when the first officer in Lafayette was killed, will be honored at this service," said Jim Craft, Lafayette Police Chief.

According to Corporal Paul Mouton with the Lafayette Police Department, officers from all over Acadiana were invited to take part in the memorial.

"We've approached every department that has suffered the loss of an officer in the line of duty and based off of the information provided from them their names are mentioned along with their story on the date that they were killed in the line of duty during the ceremony," said Corporal Paul Mouton, Lafayette Police Department.

Mouton said each day men and women take on this profession understanding they may not make it home. This service is to honor not only those individuals that represent their profession, but family members that were left behind as well.

"It's important that each year we come together and remember all those officers regardless how far back or where they're from. We should remember the law enforcement families that suffered the lost along with us when their loved ones were taken from them," said Mouton.
