It's called the Gateway to Vermilion Parish. The village of Maurice welcomes travelers leaving Lafayette on Highway 167.
Wayne Theriot, the 7th mayor of Maurice, explains the land was originally occupied by the Attakapasa Indians. Until their founder a native of Savoie, France settled into what's now the village of Maurice.
As you'd expect over the 103 years of being incorporated their population has increased. during their last census they were just under 1000 residents.
That number is expected to double by 2020, which will move them from the village of Maurice to the town of Maurice.
