Abbeville: a town founded by a Catholic priest

One of the important things about Abbeville is that local historians believe Abbeville may well be the only town founded by a Catholic priest.

Charlene Beckett is Abbeville's Main Street Program Manager. Beckett has been at this for 18 years. Three years arriving Father Megret purchased property along the Vermillion Bayou.

It was the Leblanc plantation that caught his eye and his wallet. He purchased it for about $900. Beckett says Father Megret came after the Acadians - the farmers.

In 1853 that's about 10 years after being founded the community was hit by the yellow fever. Lives were lost including that of the founding father - Father Megret.
