Beau Chene students plan school memorial

Updated:
Students and staff at Beau Chene High School in Arnaudville will continue to mourn the death of sophomore Nonchalaunt Guillory, after the teen passed away early Monday morning. Just before 7 AM on Monday, Guillory's 2000 Mazda crossed the center-line of LA 357.

The 17-year-old over corrected into the lane of 56-year-old Robert Lawrence's school bus. Lawrence's bus struck the right side of Guillory's Mazda. Guillory, who was not wearing a seatbelt died shortly after arriving at Opelousas General Hospital.

"It's very, very tragic. Certainly for the family and the school involved, and also for investigators who go out. This is a scene troopers and emergency responders certainly don't like to go out to," said Troop I Spokesman Stephen Hammons.

Just two weeks before the end of the school year, Beau Chene High Principal Keith James said once he found out it was one of his students, he delivered the devastating news to students, starting with the Guillory's closet friends and boyfriend, followed by her teammates. "She was part of the flag team, she was the manager of the basketball team so we called them in first into the auditorium to let them know and we let other friends know before we went public with it," James explained,

Five counselors were brought in addition to the two already staffed at the school, as students cried, grieved, vented and tried to understand why Guillory was gone.

"It's part of the process," James started. "Closure. It helps them grieve with each other and share their emotions. "James told News Ten one of the assistant principals as well as several students were with the family, who were finalizing funeral plans. Students will head to Beau Chene Tuesday with a new end of the year project; a memorial for Guillory.

"The students did ask if they could have a little vigil table set up by the office. I let them start it this afternoon. They are going to bring her picture and flag and notes and flowers to decorate it," James explained. As far as the driver of the school bus, Lawrence received minor injuries and was treated and released at the scene. Troopers continue to investigate why Guillory crossed the center-line, not yet ruling out speed or distracted driving.
