MORGAN CITY, La. (AP) - A single vehicle crash on LA Highway 318 near Gibbs Road has claimed the life of a 65 year old New Iberia man.
Last night at 6:40, George Carter of New Iberia, was driving a 2009 Dodge truck east on LA Highway 318 approaching a right curve. For reasons still under investigation, Carter traveled off the left side of the road and struck several trees. After striking the trees, Carter’s vehicle caught fire. Carter was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Mary Parish Coroner. Troopers are still working to determine if Carter was wearing a seat belt when the crash occurred.
It is unknown if Carter was impaired when the crash occurred. Routine toxicology samples have been obtained and will be submitted to the State Police Crime Lab for analysis.
This crash remains under investigation.
Impairment and lack of seat belt use continues to be leading factors in fatal crashes throughout Acadiana. Wearing a seat belt properly can greatly reduce a person’s risk of injury in most crashes. Seat belts allow crash forces to be spread across a large area of the body allowing a person to ride down the crash. Unrestrained persons are at a greater risk of sustaining severe or fatal injuries in a crash than a person who is restrained. Buckle up every time in every seating position. Not only is it the law, but it’s the best way to survive a crash.
