Police investigate shooting on Pearl St.

One man is lying in a hospital bed following a shooting during an armed robbery that took place in his own yard on Pearl Street around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday morning. "

The gentleman was standing in his yard when a vehicle or truck pulled up to the front. One of the individuals occupying the vehicle exited and approached him. The man initially asked for a cigarette lighter and then produced a handgun and demanded cash," said Corporal Paul Mouton with Lafayette Police.

Mouton said once the victim, 49-year-old Paul Alex, handed over the cash, the unidentified suspect then shot Alex. "The victim turned over an undisclosed amount of cash to the suspect. He then turned and began walking back to his residence at which time the suspect fired back at least one shot striking the victim in the shoulder," said Mouton.

Mouton said the suspect then fled in the vehicle with two alleged 16 year old male accomplices. Alex's wife, Wanda, said she can only hope for the best as Paul Alex was in fair condition. "I just have to keep praying to God that everything is going to be okay," said Alex.

Lafayette police did identify the vehicle and have arrested the two juveniles, but are still searching for the third suspect. "We're in the process of locating the third, we think we've identified him so it's just a matter of locating him and arresting him," said Mouton. Wanda Alex said she hopes they find the suspect soon before this happens to someone else.

"They need to hurry and catch the next person before they do this to someone else," said Alex. The two juveniles have been charged with unauthorized use of a moveable and armed robbery.

Lafayette police are asking anyone with information about the shooting to call Lafayette Police or Crime Stoppers at 232- tips.
